Overview
Caltech was founded in 1891 as Throop University and adopted its current name in 1921. It played a significant role in the development of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in the 1930s, which later became NASA's JPL, its strength in the physical sciences and engineering, including physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, and electrical engineering.
