Furman University, a private liberal arts institution founded in 1826 and named after Baptist pastor Richard Furman, is the oldest private university in South Carolina. Located in Greenville, the university maintained its Christian motto "For Christ and Learning" even after transitioning to a secular curriculum in 1992.
