Oakland University is a public research institution located in Auburn Hills and Rochester Hills, Michigan. Established in 1957 through a donation from Matilda Dodge Wilson and her husband Alfred G. Wilson, the university was initially known as Michigan State University-Oakland and operated under the Michigan State University Board of Trustees. It gained institutional independence from the board in 1970.
