Founded in 1787, Ohio University is a public research institution headquartered in Athens, Ohio. The university was first chartered by the Congress of the Confederation, then approved by the territorial legislature in 1802 and the Ohio General Assembly in 1804, before officially opening its doors to students in 1809.
