Overview
Washington College is a private liberal arts college located in Chestertown, Maryland. It received its charter from the state in 1782. George Washington played a significant role in the college's creation by agreeing to name it the "College at Chester" in his honor. He also provided financial support and served on the college's Board of Visitors and Governors. This institution is the 10th oldest college in the United States and was the first to be chartered after the country gained independence. The college became coeducational in 1891.
