Overview
Westminster University began as the Salt Lake Collegiate Institute in 1875. It was a school that helped prepare students for college. College courses were first taught in 1897. At that time, it was known as Sheldon Jackson College. The school was named after Sheldon Jackson, a Presbyterian minister. He was also the college's main supporter. For years, the college was run by the First Presbyterian Church. It was located in downtown Salt Lake City on the Collegiate Institute grounds.
